ARTS & CRAFTS CLUB

Over the past several weeks, Mrs. James and the kindergarten Arts & Crafts Club were very busy finger knitting! Children have been learning how to make scarves, bracelets, necklaces and headbands using their fingers and yarn! Fun fact… The longest piece of finger knitting measured 4,321.4 m (14,177 ft 9 in) and was completed by Niklas Bernhard (Germany) on June 10, 2004. Niklas, who used woollen yarn left overs supplied by relatives and friends, learned to finger knit in kindergarten and then used this technique to improve his concentration. The finger knitted chain took more than eight years to be finished and was wound into a ball measuring 34 cm (13 in) and weighing 5.62 kg (12 lb 6 oz).

FIRST GRADE ADVENTURES IN READING

Last week in Mrs. Whitlock’s Adventures in Reading club, students practiced Reader’s Theater plays together and then made placard signs for their “costumes.” Students enjoy rehearsing, practicing intonation, and then sharing their play with the rest of the group. We also enjoy transforming our ActivBoard into a setting that corresponds with our play. These first graders are becoming stronger readers with great presence as they practice Reader’s Theater!

2ND GRADE CREATIVE WRITING

This semester Mrs. Houston’s Creative Writing Club is really trying to utilize and expand upon the skills second graders are learning in their homeroom writing class. Students are learning ways to improve writing compare/contrast compositions and friendly letters by reviewing organizational skills for pre-writing and how to evaluate a rough draft. Over the next few months, students will also be able to request certain writing topics for club time, as well as choose their own styles of writing during free-write.

Fulton Science Academy Kindergarten Hands on Science

Hands on science by Mrs.Irshadullah is so much fun. Every week students do hands on activities and learn about science. Science is all around us everyday and the experiments promote learning and scientific awareness. The students have learned what happens when vinegar mixes with baking soda, how liquids have different densities, what happens when two primary colors mix. These are just to name a few. We can’t wait for more experiments to do in upcoming weeks.
